A Story of Reinvention, Resilience & Designing a Life You Love with Tom Tezak

In this episode of The One Life Podcast, Matt sits down with longtime friend Tom Tezak — top 1% Maui luxury Realtor, entrepreneur, former brokerage owner, and resort market coach — for a powerful conversation about reinvention, resilience, marriage, money, and designing a life that truly matters.

Tom’s journey is anything but ordinary. From deputy coroner and Army surplus store owner in Illinois… to moving his young family to Maui knowing no one… to nearly losing everything in the 2009 market crash… to rebuilding, acquiring a brokerage, and creating a life by design — this conversation is raw, practical, and deeply encouraging.

If you’ve ever felt stuck, burnt out, financially stretched, or unsure how to build success without losing your marriage or joy, this episode will meet you right where you are.

What You’ll Learn

  1. Why “Life is precious… make it count” isn’t just a phrase — it’s perspective earned through real loss
  2. The 85/15 rule of resort real estate (and how it applies to any niche market)
  3. How long-term relationship building creates opportunity years — even decades — later
  4. What nearly losing everything in 2009 taught Tom about humility, partnership, and perseverance
  5. Why communication — not protection — saved his marriage during financial crisis
  6. How grinding through a down market can quietly build massive future momentum
  7. The biggest retirement mistake real estate agents make (and how to fix it today)
  8. Why investing in real estate is one of the smartest forced-wealth strategies for agents
  9. The difference between balance and harmony — and why harmony wins
  10. How to build goals that integrate business, marriage, faith, and personal life

A Marriage Forged in Fire

Tom and his wife Lori recently celebrated 35 years of marriage with a vow renewal in Tuscany — surrounded by close friends and family.

But their story includes deep valleys.

During the 2009 market crash, Tom went from selling $35–40 million annually to almost nothing. Debt mounted. Stress filled the house. Divorce was discussed.

Then one sentence changed everything:

“We can’t let one bad year ruin 18 amazing years.”

That moment of communication shifted them from opposition to partnership.

The lesson?

You can’t protect your spouse from stress by hiding it.

You build strength by sharing it.

Resilience in a Down Market

While other agents complained about the market, Tom worked open houses 29 out of 30 days a month — for 17 straight months.

Nothing was selling.

But he was building relationships.

When the market turned, he had a pipeline ready — and went from survival to $35 million in sales again.

Short-term pain created long-term positioning.

Financial Wisdom for Agents

Tom is passionate about one hard truth:

There is no automatic retirement plan in real estate.

  1. Start a retirement account immediately.
  2. Invest consistently.
  3. Don’t inflate your lifestyle dollar-for-dollar with income.
  4. Buy real estate as a wealth vehicle.
  5. Build mailbox money.

As Tom says:

“At 65, you’ll either say, ‘I’m glad I started,’ or ‘I wish I had.’ There’s no in-between.”

Designing Your Life (Not Just Your Business)

Inspired by The One Life Podcast, Tom rebuilt his entire goal-setting workbook around harmony instead of balance.

Instead of only tracking production goals, he integrates:

  1. Business
  2. Marriage
  3. Faith
  4. Personal life
  5. Community impact
  6. Long-term vision

Because success in business means nothing if the rest of your life collapses.

If You’re Feeling Stuck or Burned Out

Tom’s advice:

  1. Take 15–30 minutes each morning to reflect.
  2. Write everything down.
  3. Get clarity on what’s broken.
  4. Make one small change.
  5. Protect one hour a day for mental clarity (walk, reflect, think).
  6. Reconnect with vision.

Incremental clarity creates momentum.

Memorable Quotes

  1. “Life is precious. Make it count.”
  2. “We can’t let one bad year ruin 18 amazing years.”
  3. “There’s no pot of gold at the end of the real estate rainbow.”
  4. “Balance is unrealistic. Harmony is intentional.”
  5. “Don’t be the 70-year-old agent who has to work because you didn’t prepare.”
